Highschool Marching Band?
Hey, I’m coming into High school as a Freshman this year and decided I’d do marching band camp ( Percussion ). I’ve been in Percussion for 2 years now back in middle school so this will be my 3rd year in band. I just recently found out that I must attend Marching Band camp, it lasts for 10 days 7 hours a day ( 10 days total for percussion, 5 days for everyone else ). I have really no idea what to expect, I have no clue what instrument I’ll play.. I’m hoping for either the pit or the snare drum. So tell me, what exactly am I going to be doing in Marching Band Camp? I know I have to learn choreography and music, is this going to be very difficult to memorize? Also, how will I know what instrument I’ll be playing. And lastly, how intimidating is it to be on the Football Field playing infront of them? Thanks very much for reading and hopefully answering!
well depending on what instrument that youre assigned to youre responsibilities in marching band will change. a lot of times the parts that you base are on seniority, but also skill.
as a freshman i played the 1st parts becasue iwas good at what i did. and there are plenty of new freshman on the drumline that get a snare or a quad part. just show them what you go and hopefully you end up with something you enjoy.
if you get a spot on the drumline youre going to have to march on the field. at my band camp we learn a whole show that we use for the competitive season. marching on the field really isnt intimidating youj ust have to work hard and not give up on yourself. peple are going to point out things that you do wrong, but dont take it too seriously because usually therye only trying to help. sometimes people are jerks but ignore them casue theyre only being stupid.
music isnt that hard to memorize and neither are you spots on the field becasue all you will do is repeat them over and over again for those 10 days and when you cme back from camp. before you know it youll ahve everything memorized and stuck in your head.
if you play in the pit, youll be standing in the front ensemble and be learning the other percussion instruments. all you really have to do is learn and memorize your music which isnt so bad. but try to get onto the field, my band always jokes that they hate the pit because they never do anything and always complain, when were actually the ones working super hard.
hopefully you get a good instrument and you really love marching band. its my favorite activity and youll definitely get a lot out of it
dont be too nervous, and if you dont like what you get this year, try for something new next year. good luck!
