Deciding Between Digital and Analogue Hearing Aids
While the marketers of digital hearing aids claim that their product is an improved, highly advanced version that will transform the way that you utilize such devices to assist your hearing impairment, there are merits and downsides to both digital devices and analogue aids. Based upon your personal preference, your budget, as well as the degree of your hearing loss, you can opt to choose between both types of aids as the most conducive to your hearing assistance needs.
Both aids seek to amplify your hearing so that the wearer can pick up sounds that might not be so easily picked up otherwise. The benefits of digital hearing aids are many, primarily the high quality of sounds being picked up. No longer do you need to manually adjust the programmable functions that the analogue aid depends upon. With a traditional analogue aid, you have to gauge the hearing environment and adjust your hearing aid to the proper program—whether you are talking in a phone conversation, in-person conversation, or in a loud environment. While this was required of the wearer of an analogue aid, by utilizing the digital aids, you no longer need to do this as the device picks up the sounds to accurate precision. Instead of picking up all sounds equally, it will pick up background noise as background noise, and conversation sounds as conversation sounds. Thus, it is much more reliable and effective. However, the downside to the digital aid is the high absolute and relative cost compared to the analogue aids. It can often go for upwards of nearly double its analogue counterpart. For the superior quality of sound, many people argue that is it well worth the price hike.
While the analogue aid is inferior in quality of the sounds picked up and converted, it is significantly cheaper than the digital version; thus, many people opt to stick with these types of aids. Perhaps, their level of hearing impairment isn’t nearly at a level that requires the precision of the digital device. Or perhaps, their budget simply cannot afford the digital version. Whatever is it, the quality of the analogue is not inferior, but only so in comparison to the digital version. It picks up sounds perfectly fine; however, it might require the extra effort on the part of the wearer to select the different programmable functions based upon their listening environment. Thus, it is difficult to say that the quality of the digital should sway you to the digital or that the price of the analogue should sway you towards the analogue. Rather, it is different for everyone based upon preference and budget.
